Dollar Academy Annual Burns Supper
On the evening of Thursday 15 February 2007 the Literary and Debating Society held the annual Burns Supper for members of Form VI, staff, governors and gue sts. A record 150 people sat down to a fine three-course meal including Roast Scottish Highland Beef with skirlie tomato and clapshot oatmeal cake. The evening began with a vigorous Address to a Haggis by a black-kilted Stewart Agnew.
Flora Murray paid a stylish tribute to the poet in her Immortal Memory. Robert Hay toasted the lasses, giving us the benefit of some shrewd comments on his fellow mortals, while Rebecca Shedden’s confident and witty reply won her the Fergusson Quaich, awarded to the participant who contributes most to the success of the ev ening. Grace Cartwright’s Toast to the School continued to provide laughter and entertainment for the company while the reply by the Bursar, Mr Justin Wilkes, was vigorously uplifting.
Songs by Burns provided further entertainment from male and female voices, while Jack Holman’s dramatic skills were reflected in his strong delivery of “To a Mouse”. Mr Ainge, a newcomer to the whole Burns experience, chaired the evening with remarkable composure. The Burns Supper Committee, led by Harriet James, certainly did a great job in organising such a successful event.
