Gold assessment expeditions – NW Sutherland
17th – 21st June / 24th – 28th June
Information for Participants
Maps required: OS map no.9 Cape Wrath and/or no.15 Assynt depending on your route. Each group should have two copies of the required maps. Maps may be printed from the internet, but do take extra copies.
Stores
With large numbers of pupils taking part in both Silver and Gold expeditions in June, there will be great demand on school equipment; you are strongly advised to try to provide your own kit as much as possible. The expedition stores will be open at the start of period 2 on Monday 4th June to sort out any equipment that you would like to hire: please note that this will be done by tent group. Alternatively, see Mr Johns prior to this, during exam leave.

Each group must carry several copies of its route card. You should print these out well before your assessment.
Minibuses will depart from Dollar at 9.00 am on the Sunday (17 th June or 24 th June). One rucksack plus one piece of hand luggage (which will be left in the kit bus during the expedition) is allowed per person.
There will be stops for refreshments at Aviemore and Ullapool.
Remember to keep your money available since you may not have access to your rucksack during the journey.
The whole group will spend Sunday evening at Scourie campsite (shop, showers, toilets available plus nice beach). Your group will be interviewed during the evening by your external assessor, Mrs Mary Matthews, and you will be briefed on safety and emergency procedures by staff.
Mr Johns, Mr Fraser, Miss Marshall, Mr Gough and Mr Tillier will be involved in supervision and providing safety cover on this trip.
You will have the opportunity to refill your fuel bottle at the Scourie campsite. On Monday morning each group will be dropped off at the start point of its expedition route.
You will be visited each evening at your camp during the expedition by a member of staff to ensure that you have arrived safely.
Staff will be based in Unapool throughout the time of the expeditions. You will be provided with mobile telephone numbers that you can use to contact staff in the event of an emergency – remember you should use your mobile telephone for emergencies only when on expedition and also remember that mobiles often do not work in mountainous areas.
The group will return to Dollar late on Thursday evening.
