Drop Dead Juliet and Mmmbeth

On the evenings of Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 December 2006 pupils in Forms I, II and III put on two excellent comic plays in the Studio Theatre. Drop Dead Juliet was a version of Romeo and Juliet where women seemed to have taken over. Mmmbeth (don’t mention the dreaded name of the play itself) was an often (deliberately) chaotic version of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy. Acting and direction were strong and inventive in both plays.

Lisa Miller was a splendidly bad-tempered Juliet, constantly upbraiding both Shakespeare (Aidan Reid) and Romeo (David Johnstone). In Mmmbeth Jamie Maxwell and Juliane Grasekamp played the lead roles with, respectively, Scottish nonchalance and moody inner turmoil. A very confident trio of witches - Ellen Houston, Elizabeth Shedden and Charlotte Lennon – lured everyone to their untimely ends.

Directors Mr Russell, Miss Poole and Mrs Du Vivier extend a special thank you to Lighting, Sound and Stage Manager Nick Robinson-Wall (Form VI) who is leaving at the end of this term. He has given a great deal to drama over the past few years and has been the brains behind the fine lighting we have become accustomed to expect in the new theatre.
