Mr and Mrs Allan took over as Houseparents of Heyworth Boarding House in August 2004. Their son Richard was Head Boy in session 2003-04 and a key member of the 1st XV in that session. He now attends Glasgow University Vet School, and older brother Andrew graduated from Glasgow University in 2005. Their daughter Elisabeth is in her final year at the Academy. Mr Jim Allan has worked in the Modern Languages Department for 27 years and has taken many school trips to France and Spain. Mrs Ann Allan comes from a background in banking, but has also been well known in the past to a number of members of staff as a very successful childminder.

One aspect that is notable in Heyworth is the relaxed and cheerful atmosphere in the house, making it a real home from home. Many of the facilities in the house have been updated in recent years, and there are more improvements planned. The staff are headed by two Houseparents, Mr and Mrs Allan, supported by six assistant housestaff who work on a shift basis throughout the week during the days and evenings and by two house tutors (both of whom teach in the senior school) who spend one evening a week and one weekend a term in the house.

All the staff play an active role in the pastoral welfare of the girls, working together as a team that is supportive of each other and the girls. Considerable help and time is given to the girls to encourage them in their studies, and the results are that Heyworth has a fine academic record.

Particularly impressive, too, is the support and camaraderie the girls show each other; the skills they learn living as part of an extended family will stay with them for life.

Key facts about the House itself….

  • It has 15 bedrooms - it is usual for Seniors to have single study bedrooms, whereas up to Form 3 or 4 pupils share with one or two other girls.
  • The Juniors have use of a Prep Room which is supervised on a daily basis.
  • The house has two large Common Rooms, dedicated to either Juniors or Seniors, both comfortable and newly decorated. They both have a large screen television, video recorder and DVD player. The Junior Common Room has a Table Tennis Table in addition.
  • The recently revamped in-House supper kitchen is used to prepare supper and snacks for the girls on a daily basis, in addition to the meals provided in the main school dining room. Typical suppers include fruit salad and yogurt, toasties, home-made pizzas, baked potatoes, and vegetables with dips.
  • The House has a piano.
  • All Laundry is washed within the House on a daily basis.
  • There is a phone in the house which can be used to call home with a phonecard or to contact other parts of the school.
