BOARDING
IN DOLLAR
Dollar Academy prides itself on being the oldest co-educational
boarding school in the UK. There are four boarding Houses:
girls throughout the age range live in Argyll or Heyworth;
McNabb houses senior boys in its newly refurbished single
bedsits, and Tait has the younger boys. Numbers in Houses
are kept low in order to maintain a family atmosphere Significantly,
these Houses are looked after by members of the teaching staff
who are called "Houseparents", rather than "Housemasters
/ mistresses". Boarders at Dollar are able to share and explore many different cultures,
with pupils coming from countries as far afield as USA, The Middle East,
Nigeria, and the Caribbean. Others may come from various parts
of Scotland; from families with a Scottish connection in places
like Canada; or from service families in Germany and beyond.
Boarders have access to the extensive grounds and facilities
of the school, such as the swimming pool, the ICT suites,
a gym and fitness suite, and opportunities to learn new skills
ranging from flamenco dancing and horse riding to indoor football and skiing. Boarders are well known
for their impressive contributions to the rich extra-curricular
life at Dollar. Weekend activities are widely available, and
are organised through the individual House, or across the
boarding community as a whole. Boarders can also enjoy all
the advantages of being in the dramatic Scottish countryside
while at the same time having the advantages of the small
town of Dollar on their doorstep, and the cities of Edinburgh
and Glasgow less than forty minutes away.
