in McNabb House
McNabb is the senior boys boarding house catering for 27 boys when full. It is run as a family home with an ethos that emphasises cooperation and interdependence. The houseparents, Mr and Mrs McFadyean, are both teachers at the Academy, one in the Prep
and one in the Senior School, while our two house tutors hail from the P.E. and English Departments. In addition there are three invaluable members of staff, the assistant housemistresses, who are on hand through most of the week to make sure that clothes are ironed, rugby kit washed and boys well fed. The McNabb family is completed by the two youngest members of the house, Mr & Mrs McFadyean’s children Freddie and Abi and their feline and canine friends George and Ozzy. Their presence throughout the house creates a real sense of a very large and happy family home.
Designed b
y William Playfair, the architect of the impressive main building of the school, the house has been an important part of Dollar life for over 180 years. Named after Captain John McNabb who set aside money in his will for the provision of a school for the parish of Dollar, the house occupies a prominent position on Academy Place. Over the years it has been extended and developed and we now have study bedrooms for 21 of the 27 boys; generous twin rooms (including one with en suite toilet and shower) for the remaining 6; a vast common room with breakfast bar; a computer suite; and a secluded patio for summer barbecues.
