WELCOME TO TAIT: JUNIOR BOYS

Click on the picture below to learn about life in Tait House

Tait is Dollar's Junior Boys' Boarding House, with up to 25 boys from 10 to 16 years of age currently in residence. The house itself was designed by William Playfair at the same time as he designed the school, and it has since been extended to comprise 12 bedrooms - some single study rooms, and others with ample space for up to four younger boys.

The boys are cared for by Mr and Mrs Lumsden who have endeavoured to create a real family atmosphere in Tait; Mr Lumsden teaches Chemistry and is also a Head of Year, while Mrs Lumsden, the previous Head of Classics, is currently enjoying a career break to bring up Tait’s youngest residents, Gregor (age 2), and Angus (born December 2006). They are supported by a team of seven Assistant Housestaff who look after laundry, cleaning and suppers, and two House Tutors – Mr Nelson (Art & Design ) and Mr Welsh (History/Modern Studies) who cover one evening each per week. Additionally, we have a Gap Year student from Australia staying in the House – Josh Dillon was a boarder himself at The Scots’ College, Sydney, and his duties include assisting in the PE department and in the House.

The facilities in Tait House include the following:

  • A Computer Room - the five PCs are linked to the school network, with fast internet connections and a laser printer. We also have a Skype phone and webcam which allows free calls across the world via the internet.
  • A Games Room – the boys bring their own games consoles and plug them into one of the four televisions which are supplied.
  • An Outdoor Artificial Football Area in the back garden - very popular for letting off steam after a hard day at school! Heavily used all year round.
  • A large Prep Room with a table football game, table tennis table, a stereo, a large pool table and many board games.
  • A House Library of fiction, non-fiction, reference and school books. We also receive a box of twenty new books from the School Librarian every six weeks.
  • An ever-growing House DVD and Video Library.
  • A Junior TV Room - with 28” widescreen digital TV with Freeview, which is connected to a DVD Player and a VCR. This comfortable room is used mainly by Form II and below and has two large comfortable sofas.
  • A Senior TV Room with 32” widescreen digital TV with Freeview, which is connected to a surround-sound DVD system and a VCR. This room has three large comfortable sofas and is used by boys in Form III and above.
  • A Payphone for the boys in a private cubicle.
