Sculpture
The new sculpture in the school grounds adjacent to the Maguire Building is the work of Diane Maclean, a sculptor of national and international reputation. Her work combines elements of the natural world working in harmony with highly formal, semi-industrial steel panels which are highly reflective of the light and space around t hem. From a distance, and in some conditions, the image seems to be more one of mirage than tangible artefact. The sculpture changes in mood with the quality of light, by night and day, casting changing, dramatic shadows and throwing complex patterns of reflected light onto the ground around it. The seasons will play a part and winter views with snow on the ground promise to be equally, if not more, intriguing. There is a great sense of movement in the work, images being reflected back at obscure and unexpected angles providing an ever changing multiplicity of views. The work might well provide inspiration for drama and art from the classes housed in the Maguire Building. In all the sculpture is an interesting addition to our grounds, a significant art work in its own right and one that has drawn a great deal of very positive comment.
