We learned with much sadness of the death on 21 September 2006 of Mrs Joan Brown, after a long illness borne with much courage and vibrant good humour.
Joan came to Dollar as Head of Home Economics in 1995, and “Cordon Brown” became the cuisine of choice in the Academy. An excellent teacher of all age groups from tiniest children to adults, and with extensive background as Adviser in Home Economics in Highland Region, she was able to conjure the most sophisticated dishes from the most unlikely children.
Major charity drives were launched from the biscuit factory in Home Economics, and everyone in Dollar looked forward to each new initiative – Vitamin A Day with carrot cake muffins, for example – with keen anticipation. The Prep 1 and Form VI Teddy Bears’ Picnic was her invention, and it is still going strong. Joan particularly delighted in the visit of Sir Garry Sobers, complete with teddy bear, to one such social event of Dollar’s summer term.
Joan’s illness did not dampen her enthusiasm and zest. Indeed, knowing that her time was short, she celebrated Christmas 2006 on Bastille Day, 14 July instead.
Deepest condolences are sent to her family from her many friends in Dollar. |
