Prep School - The Osiligi Maasai Warrior Troupe

The Osiligi Maasai Warrior Troupe

Pupils of Dollar Academy were captivated by the performance of the Osiligi Warrior Dance Troupe on Thursday 17th May.  The group come from Kesamis near Kiserian in Kenya, about 30 miles from Nairobi where they had started to perform for tourists in order to raise money to support the best aspects of their culture.  In recent times, the Maasai have had to adapt to a less nomadic existence, build more permanent settlements and find ways to educate their youngsters. Thanks to first their brief tour in 2005 the troupe have worked wonders in their village improving housing, health and education, and their 2007 tour in Scotland will further these improvements.

The performances were narrated by one of the warriors called Emmanuel who explained the stories behind the dances, whistling talk and songs.  The children were invited to ask questions about the Maasai way of life and explanations were given in the warmest way by this tremendously charming group. Watching the Maasai leap high into the air, the pupils were spell bound especially when pupils, parents and teachers were invited to join in.

Everyone who saw the performances learned a great deal about the warmth and joy of the troupe as well as gaining a greater understanding of a very different culture.
