What’s happening in Prep 5 during Term One?

We are studying rainforests this term. We visited the Rainforest Exhibit at Edinburgh’s Botanic Gardens to help us imagine what it might be like in a rainforest. We saw some amazing things!

The School Trip
by Laura Manson

On Thursday we went to the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. We arrived in minibuses. First we walked around the gardens and we saw lots of squirrels and trees with berries on them. Then we went to the education centre to have lunch. After that we went to all the green houses and I thought they were all very smelly but we saw amazing plants. There was a plant that moved if you touched it. That was my favourite part. We also saw some plants with leaves that were twice the size of me! Some leaves were so soft I could use it as a pillow. In the smelly green house we saw beautiful leaves with pink, orange and yellow in the same leaf. We all had a great time. We had to hurry at the end because the wind was blowing so hard that we had to go back to the education centre. Then we watched Daniel blow a (pretend) poison dart at a monkey (really, a balloon)! Then we hurried to the mini buses and went home. It was great!

Our Excursion
by Calum Weir

On Thursday the 26th of October we went to the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. We went on two mini buses. When we got there we started to walk on the path and we looked at all the trees. We saw a lot of squirrels.

We went into the huge greenhouses and a woman called Cath showed us around. I think I saw a tree frog. The first greenhouse smelt quite moist. The second greenhouse was very hot and the air was really thick but smelt quite nice. We saw some mini bananas and some huge leaves. We also saw some red ants eating a dead cockroach. There were some cocoa pods. There was a greenhouse that had “part of the Amazon River in it,” Cath said. After we visited all the greenhouses, Daniel fired a fake dart at a balloon.

My favourite bit was when we saw the mini bananas. I had an excellent time at the Botanic Gardens and I would really like to go again.
