Does Shape Affect Speed?

Ruari Jardine travelled with his Science Fair project, ‘Does Shape Affect Speed?’ to the Royal Society in London. He was the Bronze Crest award winner at the Scottish Finals in Dundee last April. Together with many other individual and group projects in his section he was chosen for the second prize in the Bronze category of this UK wide competition. Ruari’s project examined different shapes and their affect on speed. He had been inspired by a visit to a display of hunting birds. This led him to think about the shape of birds’ wings. The judges in London were greatly impressed with the originality of the project, especially his parachute idea. He showed real initiative in his experimental design and used simple models to explore complicated ideas. Ruari was also able to look at possible improvements to his project and discussed these with all the judges on the day.
