HIGHLIGHTS
- Purpose-built Food and Fabric Technology rooms are well
equipped with a wide range of modern equipment.
- To ensure a continuous, coherent Home Economics experience,
strong links are established with Prep and Junior Schools.
- Twice each session pupils take part in a charity fund
raising exercise to ensure an understanding of large-scale
food preparation and quality assurance requirements.
- Form VI pupils prepare a picnic, held in the beautiful
school grounds, for themselves and Prep I pupils to celebrate
the end of the SQA examinations.

COURSE INFORMATION
Age 5-14
In a relaxed, enjoyable but disciplined environment, Home
Economics makes a major contribution to the Technology and
Health aspects of Environmental Studies within the 5-14 framework.
Traditionally, Home Economics has been responsible for the
development of practical, sensory, creative and manipulative
skills. While these skills continue to be important, the following,
less obvious transferable skills are also developed:
Problem solving
Ergonomics
Investigating
Interpreting
Evaluating Information
Presenting Solutions
The course includes:
· Applied healthy eating
· Food hygiene and kitchen safety
· Basic food preparation techniques
· Technological innovations
· Introduction to textiles
· Basic fabric skills and the use of sewing machines
· 'Design and make' projects in both food and fabric

Form VI Student Survival Course
This course was specially designed for Dollar Academy pupils
to ensure that they have the necessary knowledge and skills
to take care of themselves on leaving school. Pupils will
develop responsible attitudes to, and apply basic practical
knowledge of food-hygiene, kitchen safety, and healthy-eating
while developing the skills required to prepare a variety
of dishes. The Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland
(REHIS) Elementary Food Hygiene Certificate will be offered
as an optional part of the course.
