Local Council Hustings: 1st May 2007

A local council hustings for Clackmannanshire East ward was held in Dollar Academy on Tuesday 1st May. In attendance were Charles Bell (Scottish Liberal Democrats); Alastair Campbell (Scottish Conservative and Unionist), Alison Lindsay (Scottish National Party) and Harry McLaren (Scottish Labour Party). Irene Hamilton standing for the SNP could not attend. The candidates had five minutes each in which to convince the sixth form students why they should be elected. There was then time for a few challenging questions from the floor. Voting followed using the single transferable voting (STV) system which is to be used for the first time in the local council elections on May 3rd. Form III Modern Studies pupils acted as polling clerks as Form VI coped with the choices facing them on the ballot paper.

Clackmannanshire East is a three-representative ward and the successful candidates, as elected by the pupils, were Charles Bell, Alastair Campbell and Harry McLaren.

The event was organised by the History/Modern Studies department.
