A group of Dollar pupils were recently invited to discuss the environment and climate change with David Miliband, Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. A selection of Form V and VI Geography pupils participated in an informative discussion held in Tullibody. Questions as diverse as carbon footprints, deforestation, the Kyoto Agreement, recycling and the growth of the Chinese and Indian economies were put to the Secretary of State. Robbie Kirk quizzed the Minister on biofuels and how the Government would encourage people to purchase greener cars, referring to the “Sexy Green Car Show”, which had recently been opened by the Minister. The Minister was interested and alarmed to learn about public transport provision and cost in this constituency. Similar concerns of students living in the area were brought to the immediate attention of Gordon Banks, Labour MP for Ochil and South Perthshire and Cllr Brian Fearon. The discussion was informative and thought provoking, highlighting that much still has to be done if the UK and the rest of the world are to reduce their carbon footprint.
