Nuffield Science Bursary Scheme

Fiona Macdonald and Ronan Fraser were both involved in Nuffield Bursary projects at the University of Stirling. They spent four weeks in the summer doing their research with mentors at the University. There was a celebration event to exhibit their posters of their work held at Edinburgh Zoo. Dollar Academy has been involved in the Nuffield Scheme for several years now. It is very worthwhile for potential science students to carry out.

The main aim of the Nuffield Science Bursary Scheme is to provide students with the unique opportunity to experience science in practice. It enables secondary students at the end of S5 in the transition period to S6 who are interested in pursuing a career in science or technology a chance to work alongside practicing scientists by contributing to science or technology based projects in the areas of research and development.

Unlike work experience schemes, students carry out projects which are well defined from the start, have an outcome that is achievable within the time available and which will make a contribution to the work of the host organisation.

The host organisations can range from commercial and industrial establishments to research institutions and universities.

Fiona was working in the Psychology Department on facial recognition for use by the Police in identification of suspected criminals. She made up some of her own by using a programme that can merge features from descriptions from eye witnesses.
