Colts Cricket Tour 2007

This year saw the inaugural Colts Cricket Tour. Thirteen Form III boys, accompanied by Mr Robson and Mr Frost made the short journey over the border to compete with three leading schools in North England.

The first opponents were Barnard Castle School in Northumberland. Fortunately the rain relented and we were able to complete a full match.

Friday morning was one of the highlights of the tour as the squad visited the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street which is the home of Durham County Cricket Club and regularly hosts international cricket. The boys were given a fascinating tour of the ground, including the impressive media centre, indoor school and team dressing rooms. They were also permitted to examine the square as the groundsman prepared the wicket for a forthcoming first class match, and enjoyed practising their fielding on the flawless outfield. Suitably inspired, the team headed on to their next opponents, Newcastle Royal Grammar School. The sun shone as we arrived to play at the County Ground, Jesmond – one of the finest venues in the county.

Our final game was against Dame Allan’s School, also in Newcastle.

Overall, whilst the tour was not successful in terms of victories, it was clear that the boys learnt a lot about the game, experienced some different types of conditions and opposition and most importantly had a lot of fun along the way. “Haway the lads !”
