Geography Trip to Morocco 2008

Following the success of the Morocco Expedition over the Easter break, Dollar Academy will be running a second expedition to Morocco during the Easter break in 2008, which will allow all of our pupils to experience what life is like in a developing country and to participate in a community project.

Purpose of the trip
The aim is to introduce our pupils to the sheer diversity of Morocco and for them to build up an appreciative understanding of this immensely varied country and of life in general in a developing country. The main focus of the trip is on trekking into the remote village of Agouns in the High Atlas mountains where the group will participate in a community project, working alongside the local villagers. In 2007 the pupils helped upgrade the water and irrigation supply to the village and we hope to return in 2008, working once again with the villagers, to improve the village school. We were all touched by the genuine friendship and hospitality of the Berber people and the hardships which they endure, appreciating the luxury that we are fortunate enough to live in. (As a group, the pupils must raise £500 towards the funding of the community project and we shall be planning a number of events in the intervening months). Following the mountain stay the group visit the gorgeous coastal town of Essaouira and the vibrant city of Marrakech. During their visit they will observe many different aspects of this fascinating country, and gain personal and group experiences which will stay with them for a lifetime. In addition, pupils who have studied the language will have the opportunity to practise their French. The expedition is being organised by the Geography department but is open to non-geographers as well as geographers.

If you wish your son/daughter/ward to take part in the proposed trip, please download and complete the Application Form and Far Frontiers Booking Form and return to Miss Cowan by Monday 11 June at the latest, along with a deposit of £500 (cheques made payable to "Dollar Academy”). This deadline is to ensure flight and accommodation bookings. Please note the deposit will only be returnable if a replacement is found for a pupil who has withdrawn and/or sufficient numbers do not sign up for the Expedition by the end of this term.
